The latest on the Lysol contamination crisis in New York City and beyond article Lysol is a highly concentrated bleach that has become synonymous with the disinfectant industry, with the brand name now sold in more than 60 countries around the world.
In its heyday, the brand was widely used in hospitals and other medical facilities as a disinfectant and an antiseptic.
The company sold the product to hospitals for about a decade before it was phased out in favor of chlorine.
In 2017, the company said it had spent about $60 million on cleaning costs, and was planning to close the remaining facilities.
But as of early 2018, Lysol was still being used as a bleach.
A few months ago, the New York Attorney General’s Office announced that it had filed a lawsuit against the company, claiming it illegally billed hospitals for the use of Lysol at an inflated rate of $8 per bottle.
Lysol is still widely used as disinfectant, and in some cases, as an antacids, disinfectant or an anti-microbial.
In one test, the chemical produced nearly 40 times the level of chlorine that is safe for human use.
The New York attorney general’s office said it was also seeking $2 million in back taxes from the company and more than $2.5 million in penalties.
In a statement to BuzzFeed News, a Lysol spokeswoman said that the company was committed to continuing to develop and market safe, environmentally responsible, and affordable solutions for our customers and that it was not aware of any additional lawsuits that might arise in the future.
The spokeswoman also said that Lysol “has continued to aggressively work to remove and eliminate all of the toxins and contaminants from our supply chain,” and that the legal action was the result of the company’s continued efforts to improve its process.
The Attorney General said that “while the Company continues to address this matter in accordance with the state of New York law, there is no further indication that the Company is aware of or in compliance with any New York or federal regulatory requirements regarding the use and distribution of Lysols or any other disinfectants.”
But a spokesperson for Lysol told BuzzFeed News that the state has taken no further action and that “it is our policy to pursue actions to prevent and address any potential safety issues, including the need to use safer, cleaner, and more environmentally-friendly disinfectants in our supply chains.”
The spokesperson said the company has taken measures to protect its manufacturing facilities, including installing new chlorine-resistant equipment, and “we have committed to continue to improve the processes we use to produce our disinfectants to ensure they are safe, effective and compliant with all applicable regulatory requirements.”
A spokesperson for the New Jersey Division of Environmental Protection said that in the past, it has filed a number of cases against manufacturers of disinfectants for improper use and contamination of public health systems, but that “the most recent incident appears to be unrelated to this litigation.”
A Lysol spokesperson also told BuzzFeed that “there is no longer any active investigation by the New New York Division of EPA or any New Jersey law enforcement agency into the potential violation of any regulatory requirement.”
In a recent interview with The Verge, Mark P. O’Brien, who previously served as the general counsel for the American Chemical Society and is now president of the American Chemistry Council, said the agency “has been working hard” to educate its own employees about the potential risks of using Lysol and other disinfectant chemicals.
“We’ve made it clear that these chemicals are not safe,” O’Briensaid.
“The problem is that, for a long time, the industry has not really gotten it.”
In 2017 the Chemical Safety Board of Canada found that Lysols used in disinfection of food and beverages were “highly toxic” and potentially carcinogenic to humans and animals.
“When you look at the chemical composition of these chemicals, they don’t look like you’re drinking your own urine,” Pascale said in an interview with CBC News.
“It looks like you’ve got a mixture of chemicals, and they’re highly toxic.”
A report by the American Association of State and Territorial Chemists (ASCT) found that while Lysol has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, it is not yet widely available for sale.
“As a result, it’s still relatively difficult for consumers to buy Lysols and make sure they’re safe,” said ASCT president David K. Gagnon.
“This is why we’ve made this public statement about Lysols that we think will encourage people to buy them.”
But even though Lysols are not widely available, some health experts have warned that consumers should be aware of the chemical’s risks, particularly if they have a history of urinary tract infections or have had a severe reaction to a previous disinfectant.
In 2018, the American Medical Association issued a statement calling for more research into the safety of Lysolic acid.
The American Chemical Council issued a similar statement in 2017 calling for the FDA to “immediately
